Camping journey through the ages

Image
Camping is definitely a journey that changes as you age / your kids age. My first memories of camping - was touring the North Island of New Zealand in a campervan with my family - I was 4 years old, and still stun my family of my memories and when ever the slides comes out (yes I am showing my age) I can pick the places that I know I didn't see in real life (turns out I slept through a couple of places).  I returned to the North lsland in my 40's and was struck on arrival at a few places, that I instantly remembered being there before.  After that trip we had a couple of trips staying in caravans, but it wasn't until I participated in the Great Victoria Bike rides in my teens that I revisted camping.  In my 20's & 30's  I was a regular fixture at friends properties where we glamped it up in a hut on some acreage, no running water or electricity, but a solid roof over our heads and a pot belly running flat out in the corner.  I tried out camping with a ...

Tents

Image
Tents come is so many shapes, sizes, some are basic, some have built in lights, there are so many on the market it is very hard to work out which is best for you.  And I wouldn't assume what is perfect for me, is perfect for you.   What I can do is share what I look for in a tent, what I like and things to consider.  There are heaps of the 10 "best" tent reviews, I absolutely recommend the snowy's website to check out tent features as they have a lot of videos on setting up, packing down and the features of the tents they stock.  Now I have owned 6 tents in my life, and I'll go through the reasoning for buying them, and prices, note that 4 were second hand. Dome 4 man tent : Purchased from:  My Dad Cost:  Free - hand me down Condition:  Used, no damage Features I loved:  1. Head height - I could stand up and not have my head touch the top of the tent - so no neck/back issues from crouching over. 2. Large door opening : I could walk through ...

Basic Camp Gear Run information and mistakes

Image
If you have read my first post you will know that I was lucky enough to start out with some base kit from my Dad.  I am going to post in the coming weeks about the kit for different types of camping duration, weather and scenarios (ie couple, family, single etc).   This post focuses on the basics, and some mistakes I made so you can learn from from my experiences.  You will notice I keep mentioning size when discussing gear, this is reference to what fits in my car, Rav4 2012 model.  It takes into consideration that camping with kids also means I pack a lot of extras that we have gradually bought across the years: 3 x kayaks on our roof, and 3 x bikes mounted off our spare wheel, plus the following inside the car: 3 x Boogie boards, paddles, wetsuits, life jackets, helmets, cricket sets, footballs and scooters. It takes clever packing and having essential gear at small sizes in order to fit in all the extra sporting goods we travel with.  If all 4 of us are...

Quest 2 Wander : The Begining, the first seedlings of discovery...

I think I've always had a wandering soul, new places, meant a new adventure, a new home meant a new surrounding, a new job, meant new experiences....  I was fortunate in my 20's to take a job that meant I got to travel, and was taught by the person training me (Ken was his name), to take the time to look around, see places, eat at new places, and really take in the surroundings, not just the latest construction site we were working at.  This shifted my workaholic nature, and awoke the wandering soul within.  From that job, I then headed off overseas for a few months, back packing in my 30's - which was really a 20's rite of passage that I missed out on whilst working hard.   It felt like I had started my adult life a little backwards to everyone around me, at 18 I was in a relationship that lasted 10 years, I also worked for the same company for 10 years (different positions every year), then at 28 was single and changing companies for the first time, movin...
